Sometimes, the smallest details hold the most magic. In today’s tutorial, I’m sharing how to create a hidden paperclip bookmark—a delicate, functional accent that blends into your journal or card design like a secret whisper of joy. It’s a lovely way to tuck affirmations, hold pages, or simply add a touch of handmade charm.

Here’s the finished piece from my latest journal project:

✂️ Materials You’ll Need:

  • 1 large paperclip (gold, rose gold, or matte black work beautifully)

  • Decorative cardstock or patterned paper

  • Lace trim, ribbon, or fabric scraps

  • Embellishments: rhinestones, stickers, pressed flowers, charms

  • Craft glue or hot glue gun

  • Scissors or craft knife

  • Optional: quote stickers, washi tape, double-sided tape

🪡 Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Cut Your Base

Choose a cardstock that complements your journal’s theme. Cut a rectangle about 2" x 3"—this will be the visible part of your bookmark.

2. Slide & Secure the Paperclip

Attach the paperclip halfway onto the bottom edge of the cardstock. Flip it over and glue only the back side of the clip to keep the front clean and decorative. For extra strength, sandwich the clip between two layers of cardstock.

3. Conceal the Clip

Wrap lace, ribbon, or fabric around the bottom edge to hide the clip. This adds texture and mystery—your bookmark will look like part of the journal cover.

4. Add Your Magic

Decorate the front with:

  • A mini illustration or portrait

  • Rhinestones or sequins for sparkle

  • A quote or affirmation sticker (mine says: “I am surrounded by positive energy”)

Layer textures and colors to create depth. Think of it as a tiny canvas for your soul.

5. Finish the Back (Optional)

Glue a second piece of cardstock to the back to hide glue marks and reinforce the structure.

6. Clip & Reveal

Slide the bookmark onto a journal page so only the decorated top peeks out. It holds the page securely while looking like part of the design—a hidden hug for your thoughts.

🌼 Why I Love This Project

This bookmark isn’t just practical—it’s personal. It carries intention, beauty, and a quiet sense of delight. Whether you’re gifting it, journaling with it, or adding it to your collection, it’s a gentle reminder that creativity lives in the details.
