I arrived in Vietnam with a backpack full of essentials and a heart wide open. No luxury, no itinerary—just curiosity and a journal waiting to be filled. This was the first chapter of my solo journey across Asia, and Vietnam greeted me with a kind of beautiful chaos that felt like a dare to dive in.
🛬 Landing in Hanoi
The air was thick with humidity and possibility. Motorbikes zipped past in every direction, their horns a language of their own. I wandered through Hanoi’s Old Quarter, dodging scooters and soaking in the scent of grilled meats, fresh herbs, and exhaust fumes. It was messy, loud, and alive—and I loved it.
I found my first stay at The One Hostel Hanoi, a rooftop pool hostel tucked into the city’s heartbeat. For less than $10 a night, I had a bunk bed, a free breakfast, and a dozen strangers who felt like future stories.
🍜 First Taste, First Entry
I sat on a plastic stool so low it felt like sitting on the ground, knees tucked awkwardly, and ordered a bowl of pho. The broth was deep and fragrant, the noodles soft and comforting. I wrote in my journal:
“Vietnam tastes like courage. Like comfort in chaos. Like the kind of warmth that sneaks up on you.”
🚍 Moving Through the Country
I traveled south by sleeper bus—cheap, surprisingly cozy, and perfect for overnight journeys. I woke up in Hội An, where lanterns floated like dreams above the river. I stayed at HY Budget Local Hotel, a quiet guesthouse with charm and simplicity.
Each city offered a new rhythm. In Hue, I took the train and watched rice paddies blur past. In Da Nang, I rented a motorbike and felt the wind press stories into my skin.
🧿 Sensory Keepsakes
At a market in Hội An, I found beads and charms that whispered memories. I chose a tiny lantern charm to represent Vietnam—its glow a symbol of the warmth I found in unexpected places.
📝 Reflections from the Road
Vietnam taught me that travel isn’t about checking off destinations. It’s about the quiet moments: the vendor who smiled as she handed me mango slices, the hostel roommate who shared his story over instant noodles, the feeling of being small and free in a world so wide.
“I came here looking for adventure. What I found was connection.”
